Every Tuesday we celebrate #pubday, aka the day new books officially hit bookshelves! It’s another great week of new releases, with one of my recent favorites of the year, SYLVIA’S SECOND ACT, publishing today. My review below, along with blurbs on some of the other big books publishing today. If you get a second, let me know what you’re most excited for!
SYLVIA’S SECOND ACT by Hillary Yablon: Ya’ll…I freakin’ loved this book. If you’re looking for easy, breezy soapy escapism, stop reading this review and just go get yourself a copy of this book. It’s so damn delightful and utterly entertaining. Part GOLDEN GIRLS, part SEX AND THE CITY, the book follows Sylvia, a 63-year-old woman who -in the wake of her husband’s infidelity- reboots her life by moving from Boca to NYC with her best friend. Think Thelma & Louise, but with martinis and manolos, the book is a must-read for fans of FINLAY DONOVAN, THE NEST, WHERE’D YOU GO BERNADETTE. It’s hilarious and heartwarming and there’s a couple legit twists that had me gasping. I really hope this is the first book in a new series, because I could go on so many more adventures with Sylvia. I’m telling you…this is one of those perennial favorites that I just know I’m going to recommend to everyone this year.
As for today’s notable new releases:
VICTIM by Andrew Boryga: There’s a fine line between bending the truth and telling bold-faced lies, and Javier Perez is willing to cross it. Victim is a fearless satire about a hustler from the Bronx who sees through the veneer of diversity initiatives and decides to cash in on the odd currency of identity.
PRIDE AND JOY by Louisa Onome: Black Cake meets Death at a Funeral in this heartwarming and hilarious novel about three generations of a Nigerian Canadian family grappling with their matriarch’s sudden passing while their auntie insists that her sister is coming back—from an author with a “razor-sharp, smart, and tender” (Nafiza Azad, author of The Wild Ones) voice.
